ARTIST STATEMENT

MTW is standing in front of a room full of people waiting for a lecture on his work. He is on a stage. He says, "It is a gestalt, the body energy, made up of infinite evolutions of gestures, tones, impulses, sensations, predicaments, transparencies, duplicities and perversions..."

I am sitting in a chair, center stage. He turns to me.
He turns to the audience and says, "Just let Peri tell you."

I start speaking.

"Mark would say that function for art appears self-serving and narcissistic and not at all as a quest for life's meaning. But I say, we are all bound by our common drive for life experience."

I keep talking.

"Unfortunately, civilization does not uphold an existentialist point of view, and, even less every individual their right to life experience. Civilization has created elaborate control systems which give control wholly to some, partially to others, and take control totally away from still others. It is manipulative and exploitive."

I continue talking.

"Mark orders visual space in exact uncertainty. This work reveals a space that suggests the potential to be unstable. There is a promise of incessant change."

"His work alternates between fixed and free structures, an inherent 'phenomenal transparency'. They compress and open. The planes become ghosts."

"Mark starts with dense linear elements, incessantly imaginative in such a way that it compensates for the rational devise of the grid. he consequence is an entire visual field of experience and tenacity."

"There is no pictorial memory to take away from these articulated fields of sensations. He is not making societal symbols. It is a departure from a traditional painting where image, narrative, design, or process can be codified. He seeks to build his painting on a different premise. Perhaps a visual parallel could be imagined in a Miles Davis composition."

The audience is gone.
It's just us on the stage.
I woke up.
