Single Family Residence Complete Renovation
Completed in 2003
103 West Ormsby, Louisville, Kentucky
When Dr. Mark Wright, the project architect and owner, purchased this home located in the historic Old Louisville Neighborhood, the structure was being used as a six unit rental property. Dr. Wright gutted the structure to the brick walls and transformed the once dark and deteriorating house into a structure filled with natural light and open space.
Dr. Wright believes 103 West Ormsby similar to many of the houses in the Old Louisville Neighborhood have 'good bones,' but have experienced severe neglect during the last decades as the traditional family has evolved and decreased in size. In addition, many families were attracted to new construction in suburban neighborhoods, which do not require renovation or as many improvements and maintenance.
In addition, the existing interior design of these houses usually is not amenable to the way persons live today. This house was opened up and designed so that natural light floods the entire space. The interior design and renovation was influenced by many great spaces and by many great architects such as Kahn, Gaudi, Wright, Aalto and Palladio. The design and construction was based on a simple concept- 'Design toward the light'.
